SULTANAH Asma (SMK Sultanah Asma), Kedah’s premier girl’s secondary school, took home the National Inter-school Band Competition title at the Pasir Gudang stadium in Johor Baru on Aug 9.
This is the school’s fourth national-level victory since their maiden one in 1999. Their other victories in the series were in 2003 and 2007.
Sultanah Asma won the Education Ministry’s challenge trophy, RM5,000, medals and a certificate. They defeated SM Sam Tet, Ipoh, and SM Chung Hwa Wei Sin, Terengganu, which came in second and third respectively.
Led by drums major Nur Marziatul Syafinaz Omar, the band put up a superb performance to earn cheers from the spectators. The members’ smooth and energetic movements were awe-inspiring and beautiful to watch.
School principal Pn.Hjh Kartini Zakaria said she was proud that her students managed to maintain the proud tradition of being the top band in the country for the fourth time.
“Even though the members of the band are different each time, the band’s rating has remained the same throughout. They did not take part in last year’s national competition as they were taking part in an international display in Taiwan.
“The band members are a dedicated lot and they have put the school on a high pedestal by working hard to earn the honours,” she added.
Among the tunes the band played were Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow and Search’s Fantasia Bulan Madu.
